Caring for Chihuahuas
Technically speaking, Chihuahuas remain puppies for about two years. It's during that time that you need to teach your puppy everything you want it to know. Start with good feeding habits. Puppies and adults should have access to a feeding bowl with dry food at all times during the day and a separate dish of clean water. They tend to feed twice a day, but many are slow, picky eaters. Whatever is left at the end of the day, throw out and clean the bowl. Scrub the bowl out with a scrubber and very hot water, but avoid using dish soap. Chihuahuas don't seem to like the odor and that may make them turn away from the food. Leave fresh food and water for your puppy overnight. Leave dry puppy food and lots of water in a separate dish available for them 24 hours a day. After six months, leave food out for them all during the day, but discourage overnight feeding to avoid overweight dogs. If the pup seems to be having trouble chewing, add a little water to the food. Most pups take about 24-36 hours to adjust to a new environment, so please be patient. Some may react to a new environment changes in water etc. by having a bit of diarrhea. Mixing some slightly wet, well-cooked rice into the food will help with this.

If you want to paper train your Chihuahua this isn't hard at all ! We use repetitive key word and voice associations for all commands. Do your duty. Be a good boy or girl. Go potty, Lets go outside in different tones. We always make it sound exciting for them to do buy using a happy voice. We potty train our Chihuahuas by keeping them busy and in our eye sight at all times when they are out of their pen. When they are out of their cage I put newspaper by the door or close to it. They head for the paper it is time to go outside. If they are not playing with us, they are  laying on our laps watching TV or they are in their pen, crate or run resting. I have paper in their cage to potty on. They never get to run around unsupervised until they have proven themselves worthy. When they are out of the pen because they are always busy. It is easy to spot when he or she has to go potty. A Chihuahua will go to the paper by the door that you left for them to use or their attention will quickly turn from concentrating on you (playing or resting with you) to sniffing and wondering around, sometimes turning in circles. This is when you take them outside to potty using your key words. When they do go potty outside it is very important to praise them and love them for at least 15 seconds by petting, praising and hugging them. We make it seem like they have just won the Kentucky Derby. Nothing is more appreciative than seeing your Chihuahua going potty outside the first and every time. When you watch them closely you will see the signs and become an expert at detecting his or her motions telling you they have to potty. If you miss the signs and see the pup begins to have a bowel movement, Never yell just place them on the paper or take them outside using your this is where you go potty voice. You may want to put them back to the pen for a bit using your sad voice. Check back in a few minutes and take them back outside using the happy voice and try again. Doing these techniques over and over again getting your Chihuahua to understand what you want them to do is the ultimate goal. You will be amazed how smart your Chihuahua is and how much they can learn from you by using Key word, voice associations and a giving plenty of Chihuahua love.

Remember, Chihuahuas are very small. Try to keep them as far away from human feet as possible (they love to lick and play with feet, but feet can accidentally crush them). Make sure your dog is never outside in temperatures below 45 degrees Fahrenheit without being dressed in temperature protective clothing. Chihuahuas need exercise and love to play. Make sure you spend time with your animal. They love soft play toys and you'll be surprised how easily they learn to fetch their favorite toy and return it to you. Like too much food, too much exercise isn't good. If you're planning more then just a short walk around a short block, leave your pet at home. Chihuahuas get exhausted fast. Chihuahuas are generally healthy dogs with few health issues.

Chihuahuas will shake because they are happy, afraid, cold or anxious. This is normal and lets the dog express itself. This doesn't mean the animal is ill. Expect shaking to be a part of your Chihuahuas experience.
